Following the success of the VR workshops last year and utilising the extended curriculum donations, Miss Creelie once again arranged for Year 4 and 5 to have this experience of virtual learning to enhance our curriculum…
This week, Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed an immersive VR workshop which brought our history topic of The Romans to life. The children were fascinated as they began by hovering above the ancient ruins as they appear today, helping them to appreciate the incredible scale, ambition and engineering skills of this remarkable civilisation. They were then transported inside the Colosseum where they could vividly imagine the tense moments gladiators would have experienced while waiting to enter the arena and face their fate. The journey continued with a trip back in time through bustling Roman streets allowing the children to compare how wealthy Romans lived in contrast to poorer citizens – this raised a gasp in the room! The workshop gave the children a fantastic opportunity to truly visualise life in Roman times and deepened their understanding of this fascinating period in history.

Year 5 enjoyed amazing VR workshops to support their geographical learning all about North America. Each class had a session where we could view New York from above, both in day time and night. We then explored Las Vegas, seeing all of the lights, fountains, hotels and landmarks. A trip to the Hoover Dam followed and then a stop at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Our next destination was somewhere warmer, the Mayan city of Chichen Itza with its imposing temples and structure; and our final stop was the wild north of Canada where we observed the stars appearing at night and the Northern Lights on the horizon – memorable learning for us all!
