This year’s Science Week theme is “Change and Adapting”. Throughout the week, all of our budding Westfield scientists completed various scientific activities. On Tuesday afternoon we joined with the Infant School children for a federation event. Year 2 and 3 explored how coins have changed the material they are made of using magnets. Did you know that older coins are tungsten and nickel, which are expensive metals, whereas new coins are steel which is cheaper? Year 4 and Year 1 examined how animals have adapted to their habitats, playing a matching game and drawing diagrams. Reception and Year 5 created animal models using cardboard tubes and a variety of other materials. Classes then completed a third activity, choosing either an antibody adventure, deep sea yoga or how we could adapt playground games for children with disabilities. During the week, an early morning activity of ‘Guess Who?’ revealed what staff looked like as babies or toddlers, with the children trying to guess who the photo was.. Another exciting themed activity was a whole school data collection to see how our height changes over time. We used our data to identify what an average child in each class would look like. This was then discussed in a special assembly on Friday with pupils from each class giving an oral report of their findings. Super scientific fun was had by all and I hope we have encouraged the children to be curious and ask questions.
