On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Year 6 visited the Winchester Military Museums. First, we began by looking at what life was like during the Blitz including what they ate and had to wear with rationing. We got to see a real ration book, gas masks and a real helmet worn
by a warden! Next, we went to look at a vast variety of medals given throughout WW2 including the African Star, the Home Defence Medal plus many more. We explored what the colours meant on the ribbons and got to design our own. Then, we went to look at army uniforms and see how they have changed over the years; we even got to hold a fragile allied rifle (that was deactivated!) After lunch, we were given free time to explore the museum and looked at some of the wax models, artefacts and linking to our Science unit about light, got to try some periscopes to see over the bunkers! In one of our final sessions, we visited the Gurkha Museum where we got to speak to an actual Gurkha who had served for 19 years and learnt about how they helped in the Second World War. Finally, we learnt about D-Day and explored the life of a real soldier called Horus who was part of the invading regiment. We certainly learnt a lot, it was a memorable day!
