Today all of our Key Stage 2 pupils had a fantastic day taking part in our first Federation Creative Arts Day, immersing themselves in a range of exciting themes through art, music, dance, drama and design. Each class began by looking closely at a piece of artwork, encouraging the children to share their ideas and interpretations. This was followed by a carefully chosen story to bring their theme to life and inspire their creativity throughout the day. In Year 3, children explored Japan. They created colourful bento boxes, produced their own Great Wave-inspired paintings and wrote haiku poetry, which they performed to the backdrop of Japanese music. Following this, they created
Japanese hand fans. Year 4 focused on Italy, where children explored famous artwork and created their own masterpieces, either using techniques such as pointillism, mosaic work and charcoal. They performed drama pieces in small groups before learning about the Tarantella, a lively Southern Italian folk dance, which they enjoyed practising and performing. In Year 5, the theme of Mexico inspired bright and vibrant work. After exploring alebrijes (brightly coloured Mexican folk-art sculptures of fantastical creatures), children designed their own. The focus then shifted to Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), where they created 3D masks, freeze frames and dances inspired by this important cultural tradition. Year 6 explored Monarchy, with a focus on the work of the artist Hans Holbein. Children studied Tudor portraits and how artists show power and importance through detail (Barney, our new school dog even joined in the fun). Following this, they watched the National Theatre’s production of Hamlet which then inspired them to create scenery sets.
Across the school, it was wonderful to see the children’s creativity, enthusiasm and teamwork. The day provided a fantastic opportunity
for them to express themselves, try new skills and celebrate their learning in a fun and memorable way.
